Improvised Wanderings

Since some time ago, I have been photographing Butoh performers in Tokyo. On my first encounter with them, I was strongly drawn to their unconventional and raw motions. I asked myself if there was any method that I could infuse this physical experience into my own photographic work, reaching beyond a simple documentary of Butoh.

In this series, my intention is to explore the tension and the beauty surpassing the physical and the ordinary world by consciously bringing an improvised Butoh performance into ordinary living spaces. The spontaneous moves and motions, which represent their fluid mental states evoke their personal stories, and my world gradually loses its reality. When my own world blends into that of their own, it sprouts out a new but yet trainsient story between us.
